The ShadowGate World – Illumination

The Light of the Source from which all life springs. Illumination is the source of an Angel’s Grace. It kills all Darkness, all Shadow, in all living beings. It will kill all Daemos and DownCast that are exposed to it long enough. It can severely burn humans to varying degrees based on the amount of sin in their hearts. Most beings feel that only Illumination is of the Source, that it is only Light that is good and pure, however that is not true. The Source is both Light and Dark, like the Universe it is made of matter and antimatter. Without one the other cannot exist.

Species: Nephilim (Human/Shade Hybrid)

Age: 28

Height: 5’ 8

Hair: long, straight, dark brown hair

Eyes: Hazel eyes

Description: lean and athletic, toned, gently flaring hips. Long legs. Tall and skinny, athletic physique, long, slender, long toned limbs.  A little dusky in skin tone.

“She was tall for a human female, long and lean, but not petite or delicate. There was a strength to the slenderness, a strength he could see reflected in her eyes. Her hair was long and dark, not black, but a deep, rich brown and she wore it long and straight down her back. He found his eyes drifting down the length of her, over slender curves where they lingered.

It was more than her soul he found himself attracted to. Her strength drew him, her boldness, how she met his gaze and did not shrink from him. Physically she attracted him, the beautiful curves of her face, the full mouth with just the sheen of enhanced color, the long dark lashes and gracefully arching brows. He was attracted to her on all levels, tempted by all she was to break his vows and sin. He wanted her and he did not want to.

He snarled at his weakness and she glared right back.

Misc:

  • independent, strong, determined, sharp tempered, bold, stubborn.
  • she smells of storm clouds and moonlight
  • as a half Shade it is believed she doesn’t have a Soul.

“His wings were armored along the upper ridges, covered in the light, impenetrable armor of heaven, but the main expanse of them was still exposed to fang and claw, the tips were tattered and scattered among the feathers, replacing those lost in battle, he had threaded sharp blades made of hammered star light.”

Gadreel, the Watcher of War held him tight in her embrace.  He was under her power, her lust for death a disease that touched upon souls she found favor in.  Human, angel, or demon, if they caught her eye, she marked them with her own thirst for war and chaos.  Mordecai had been so marked, long ago, during the First War. Since that day when his rage grew hot, the Watcher took claim of him.  He would fight and kill until she was replete.  It was the curse he had been given by being so savage, by being a warrior without peer.

The ShadowGate World – The Inquisition

The Inquisition:

Also known as the Burning Times. Beginning in 1231CE, this time of ignorance and fear continued well into the early 1600’s. This brutal witch hunt was started by the Catholic Church to eradicate Heretics, demons, witches and vampires. Thousands were tortured and forced to confess pacts with the Devil they had never made. Thousands died before this era of fear finally ended.

A little known fact is that the Keepers of the Faith were the catalyst behind this genocide.  In their zeal to rid the world of the Daemos and DownCast they sent thousands of humans to the pyre.

Cover Update

Very excited to say that I’ve met with an artist about the design for the cover for Angel’s Gate. It seems like forever since I began this journey and I’m finally at a stage where everything is coming together. The artist, MottWrx, completely understands my vision and I know that together we will create the perfect cover for Angel’s Gate.

It’s so important to have the right image. It’s the very first impression to all potential readers. And to find an artist who can actually understand what I’m talking about is amazing.

I’m very, very excited and just wanted to take a moment to share that excitement with all of you!

Until next time,

Chapter Fifteen – Nightmares

Not everyone is happy with AG, with what she is or the choices she’s made. There are those believe that she will prove unworthy, that she will choose darkness as others have. Behind her back they whisper and in her dreams there is one who comes to her, luring her towards darkness:

“She knew it was a dream, the signs were all there.  The vague weightlessness, the slight cushion that only a dream can possess.  AG knew and yet she still didn’t notice how the edges of her reality were growing dark and she couldn’t see past herself and the man she faced.

No, not a man.  An angel.

Mordecai stood before here, at the foot of her bed, his wings arching up and back from his broad shoulders.  She should have been startled, or at least uncomfortable to wake up with a dark angel standing over her bed like a creeper vampire from some tween novel, but it was a dream so she wasn’t.  In the dream she didn’t question why he would be there, didn’t question why she was drawn to him, why her heart wasn’t terrified of the thought of him being her Soulmate, of being eternally bound to a creature that could not die, would not age, and would not ever stop loving her.  In the dream she didn’t question, she simply rose from the bed and went to him.

The bare skin of his chest was warm and smooth under her hands and she slid into his embrace, let him pull her close, wrapping her tight with strong arms and deadly wings.  She let herself sink into the dream, deeper and deeper as his mouth found hers and he devoured her with a kiss.  Safe inside the dream she fell in love, let herself have that moment without considering the ramifications that would come with giving her heart to him.

Their lips parted and she looked up into his eyes, they were dark and different.  Different from the warm eyes that always pulled her past the harsh edges of him.  She suddenly felt cold even in his arms.  She edged back slightly, he didn’t try to stop her, but neither did he let her go.

In the dream everything grew cold and she knew then that it was no longer a dream.  She looked around, seeing the shadows that crept closer and she knew with a shiver that her father was near.  Her hand tightened on Mordecai’s arm.

“What’s wrong?”  He asked.

Chapter Fourteen – Kissed by an Angel

AG had been kissed before, but never like that.

“…She hadn’t moved.

Literally had not moved since Mordecai had melted her brain with a kiss and vanished.  She wasn’t really sure she could because she really couldn’t feel her feet.  The only thing that she could feel was the residue of that kiss.  Kiss… She’d been kissed by a freaking angel!  Was she ever going to get her mind wrapped around that?  But it wasn’t the fact that he was an angel that had her ears still ringing and her brain all fuzzy like she’d had too many glasses of really, REALLY good champagne.   Her whole body was still tingling from the after affects and she was pretty damn sure if his kiss could be bottled she’d stay drunk all day.

She didn’t know how long she’d been standing outside the kitchen like she’d been shell shocked, but the grand father clock in the foyer started chiming and helped rouse her out of her daze.  She looked around slowly at the shadows that had filled up the house and could do nothing but shake her head.

“Seriously?”  She asked herself.  “You act like you’ve never been kissed before.”

She hadn’t, not like that. She doubted anyone in the history of earth had been kissed like that.  If they had there’d be a hell of a lot more Nephilim running around.

She was surprised she could walk straight as she finally walked into the kitchen.  She still felt tipsy, could still feel his power coursing through her veins like electricity.  She wondered if he felt the same, if she had affected him on the same profound level.

She opened the fridge and then just stood there staring at its contents without seeing.  She hated that he was all she could think about, like she was some lovelorn teenager, mooning over her first kiss. She should have been more sophisticated than this.  It WAS just a kiss.

“Yeah, you keep telling yourself that sister.”  She muttered under her breath as she finally reached into the fridge and pulled out a fruit yogurt, deciding it probably wasn’t wise in her state of mind to use a stove.  With her luck she’d burn down the house while day dreaming about Mordecai…” Angel’s Gate by L. Chapter Thirteen – Angel Ride Along

Hello everyone,

In Chapter Thirteen Mordecai has finally come to the conclusion that he might not EVER be going back to the Verge, back to the war where he belongs.  A part of him is ok with this.  After all, on Earth there is AG and he’s drawn to her in a way he doesn’t quite understand.  But an angel needs a purpose.  He NEEDS to be of service to his God, so that means Gideon has been assigned to take him on a ride along of his duties as a Guardian Angel.

Neither angel is happy about this….

Mordecai doesn’t understand what it is to have to submit to human free will, even if the consequences are not always in the best interest of the humans that make them.  And Gideon is not sure how he will ever make this angel understand what it takes to be a Guardian.

“…It was not as he had expected.  It was not just wiping tears and holding hands.  It was not just protecting humans from their humanity.  It was more. It was the joyful tears of a new life, the tears of losing a charge that you had ushered throughout their entire life.  It was the anger at decisions they made against advice and urging.  It was watching them fall or fly, win or fail.  It was knowing when you stood over their broken and bloody bodies that it was not your duty to heal them though the power rested in your hands.  The restraint of self, the withholding of power and Light, when all you wanted to do was help, it was the tragedy of being bound by the Tennents, bound by duty that broke your heart.

He spent a day walking beside the Guardian and realized there were other battlefields than the Verge, other weapons than swords and other enemies besides the Forgotten.  There were Daemos and Shade, Sin Eater and DownCast, but he learned very quickly that the most deadly enemies were the humans themselves.  Their depressions, their doubts, their fears and pain they inflicted on those around them.  He watched the Guardian and wondered how he had not Fallen, how he still could retain such Light.  He also could not understand how he did not fight harder for those that were his, how he did not make them behave and choose a path that would lead to their ultimate happiness.  He could not understand why he did not force them to walk the Path back to the Source.  Was it not his duty to make sure they learned what they should in this life?  There was so much he realized he did not understand about what it meant to be a Guardian….” Angel’s Gate by L Becker
